Gum disease is a common, yet dangerous condition. If you are seeing the early symptoms including swollen and inflamed gums and bleeding when you brush or floss, it's important to receive treatment as soon as possible.
At Frederick Family Dentistry, we are proud to offer top-quality gum disease treatment to our patients in Frederick, Maryland. At our warm and friendly office, we go above and beyond to meet our patient’s needs.
Gum disease is most often caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque and tartar. Other health and lifestyle factors can increase the risk of developing gum disease. These factors can include family history, smoking and tobacco use, diabetes and other health conditions, certain medications, or hormonal changes experienced during puberty, pregnancy or menopause.
Common symptoms of gum disease include infections in the gums that cause swelling, redness or bleeding when brushing or flossing. Because the symptoms are often painless, many patients don’t know they have gum disease until the condition worsens. If left untreated, gum disease can advance, causing the gums to recede and create pockets between the tooth roots and gums. These pockets can collect bacteria and become infected. The spread of bacterial infection can eventually cause damage to oral tissues and jawbones, resulting in tooth loss.
The most effective way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene. Brush at least twice and floss daily to keep your smile healthy. Be sure to schedule regular checkups and cleanings every six months to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar.
Each case is unique, and therefore, the cost of gum disease treatment varies. We do accept all PPOs, and if you don't have insurance, be sure to ask our team about financing options.
At Frederick Family Dentistry, we offer Scaling & Root Planing. This treatment allows us to remove tartar and bacteria below the gumline, then smooth out rough spots on the root surfaces to prevent further buildups. We can also provide Dental Crown Lengthening. This involves cutting into the gum line to remove or reshape excess gum tissue.
